SEIVA AZUL (Blue Sap)

 THE PROJECT

SEIVA AZUL (Blue Sap) is a project by Dina Pimenta and Martinho Mendes.

This joint project was devised by the two artists to celebrate the Funchal Flower Festival of 2010. Both started from a common theme: an approach to the natural heritage and the traditional manufactures of the island. Each work developed in a different direction and a different space, but one complements the other.

I. FROM THE MOUNTAIN
The work of art created by Dina Pimenta can be seen on Avenida Arriaga, in the small garden at the back of São Lourenço Palace. It consists of a sculpture representing an embroidered tablecloth, displaying the flowers of the mountain massaroco (Echium candicans), also designed by the artist. The work gains an added dimension with the live performance of two feminine figures, as symbols of the exuberance and beauty of these endemic plants, usually known as pride of Madeira.

II. FROM THE COAST
Martinho Mendes develops his work in the interior of infoarte gallery and his creation is related to the coast massaroco (Echium nervosum). With the help of different media - video, drawing and sculpture – the artist analyses and explores the making of a floral arrangement with stems of this wild plant, which is not usually cut for decoration, while introducing other references to the local cultural heritage.
